Instagram update: Yay or nay?

Instagram is overhauling its timeline, and we didn't see that coming.

Instagram is having an update where your feed wouldn't be in a chronological order. Instead, the feed would likely follow the same with its mother company, Facebook. The feed you're going to scroll through is now based on an algorithm. Meaning, the timeline you will see is customized according from the posts you've liked, favorite person, band, brand to your best friend's post. Everything will be placed at the top of your timeline once you open the application. Your Instagram feed will be based on what you're interested in or what you likely and usually check in.

"If your favorite musician shares a video from last night's concert, it will be waiting for you when you wake up, no matter how many accounts you follow or what time zone you live in. And when your best friend posts a photo of her new puppy, you won't miss it," said by Instagram in their blog post.

In addition, commercials get more personal with its new update scenes. "If you post about an upcoming flash sale or a new product, it will be waiting for consumers when they wake up, no matter how many accounts they follow or what time zone they live in. And when you post a video of your barista pouring the perfect latte, customers won't miss it," said by Instagram.

Instagram co-founder and chief executive Kevin Systrom said that people miss an average of 70 percent of the posts in their feeds. "What this is about is making sure that the 30 percent you see is the best 30 percent possible," he said to the New York Times.

In a report by Quintly, it stated that Instagram isn't doing that well in its current state, Instagram's interaction rate was down nearly 40 percent last year, so this action might be in response to that.

Many Instagram users didn't like the idea and signed an online petition at Change.org. Instagram should be careful for this may turn out to be either an improvement or a setback. With this update, Instagram will continuously observe on how it would affect their online users.
